Fair Use for Documentary Filmmakers

Fair use is a common term thrown around when it comes to copyright. A full analysis is beyond the scope of this post, that’s for another time. But in this video gives a quick tip to documentary filmmakers about what you can include.

You may have caught my recent cameo in the Depp v. Heard documentary on Netflix. The documentary in general was a compilation of already existing podcast footage making it a rather easy documentary to cut and paste. This gave me the opportunity for a teaching moment about fair use in documentaries.
