Generation X: Get Your Fast Car and Fly Away

Generation X – also known as the Lost Generation – includes those of us born generally between 1963-1983. Another way to determine if you are a Generation Xer is if the song Fast Car by Tracy Chapman moves you in some way.

You see since the calendar turned 2012, I have heard Fast Car play four times. The Universe speaks to me in two ways: numbers and songs. When I hear a song successively, I know there is a message in it for me. (For example, every time I hear Time of Our Lives by Green Day, I know major change is coming. And every time I hear I Can See Clearly Now, I know angels surround me and something really good is coming my way.)

So what is the message in Fast Car?

It’s a message for our generation.

Think back to when you heard this song in 1988. For me, I was in high school and probably like you this song struck a deep cord within me.

We all wanted to get a fast car and fly away.

We wanted more from life.

We wanted a ticket to go anywhere.

We all wanted the feeling that I belong.

I had a feeling that I could be someone, be someone, be someone.

In the opinions of Baby Boomers, Gen Xers weren’t really supposed to amount to much. And, in fact, our generation’s traits were (and still are) frowned upon by the BBs (i.e. our parents). Unlike the work horses and security-minded Baby Boomers, we value our individuality, time with family and friends (as opposed to work), and defying authority. We want more than what we witnessed growing up. We feel like it’s our birthright (as Gen Xers can be a little arrogant too.)

This is a call to all Gen Xers: Our time is now.

This is the time we have been waiting for and we are who we have been waiting for.

Whatever you dreamt of doing or whoever you dreamt of being in 1988 when you listened to Fast Car, the time is now to realize that dream. We live in a time (and an economy) where our creativity can flourish, where we don’t have to put on a suit and tie (or pantyhose) and report to our boss.

It’s time to get a fast car and fly.

What will your fast car be?
