Out With the Old, In With the New: Confessions From Cleaning Out My Closet
I went Fall shopping this weekend. Everything looked like clothes from Flashdance, but I managed to make out with some new threads that I really like. And now, of course, everything in my closet feels out of style! So this led to a massive closet clearing on Sunday afternoon. I came home with five new items and ended up with ten empty hangers – not to mention stuff from my drawers. Wow! My wardrobe shrank but I love everything in my closet right now.
As I was going through my closet, I came across a business suit: the same business suit that I’ve pondered over every time I’ve cleaned out my closet for the last three years. You see it’s not just any business suit. It’s my last business suit that I own and purchased as a practicing attorney.
It’s Anne Klein. Still quite fashionable. A nice pin stripe pattern. Fit is perfect.
But I haven’t worn it in about five years.
Why have I been keeping it?
“Well, you never know.”
“I may need it to get a business loan.”
“I paid a lot of money for it.”
“I can’t just give it to Goodwill.”
“It’s hard to find a good suit.”
Really? Seriously?
I have heard these same excuses from so many feng shui clients.
And they are all just that: Excuses.
The real reason is that subconsciously I have still been hanging on to my identity as an attorney. And that suit is the last thread of it.
More importantly, this identity was wrapped in the fear that I would have to go back and practice law one day. Not just practice law – but appear in Court again. Eeks! After all that’s when you wear a suit.
So, the time has come.
I removed the suit from my closet and it’s on its way to Goodwill.
Not only can someone else look fabulous in their new Anne Klein suit, but I can move forward to do the work that I am here to do.
In the first chapter of my book, Feng Shui Your Life, I speak of the power of cleaning out your closet and how it can bring in new opportunities.
I’m walking the walk.
Stay tuned.

Okay okay… so I have some clothes that “I just can’t get rid of.” Thanks for the inspiration to check in one more time.
